Whale Watching
Unlike swimming with wild dolphins, whale watching in Mauritius is done outside of the lagoon, on the open seas. Between July and November, Humpback whales make the long journey from the cold water off of the coast of Antarctica to the warmer waters closer to the equator, passing Mauritius along the way. These Humpback whales then give birth and breed before heading back to the colder waters. While Humpback whales are typically observed between July and November, Sperm whales can be observed throughout the entire year. Humpback whales range in length between 12m and 16m and weigh up to 35,000 kg, while Sperm whales are similar in length, but typically weigh between 35,000 and 50,000 kg.
Dolphin Swim Mauritius offers you the opportunity to book a whale watching experience, together with a wild dolphin swim. Since the dolphins are most active in the early morning, the dolphin swim is typically done first. Guests are then brought back to shore where they will board the boat for whale watching. The whales can be seen throughout the day, and on a typical day there is about a 60% or 70% chance of seeing whales. Since the whale watching takes place on the open seas, outside of the lagoon, it is not recommended for pregnant women, or children under 5. For many, seeing these majestic creates in the wild is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
