What are my Chances of Seeing Wild Dolphins in Mauritius?
So you’re planning on booking a swimming with wild dolphins excursion, but you’d like to know what the chances are you’ll actually see dolphins. Most excursions claim a “90% chance of seeing wild dolphins”, but is this accurate?
The good news is that the chance you’ll see wild dolphins is probably quite a bit more than 90%. In fact, it’s quite rare for travelers to not see a pod of Mauritian wild dolphins. The dolphins are habitual creatures and typically are found in the fertile waters off of the southern part of the west coast of Mauritius every morning. Based on the thousands of trips we’ve organized, we’d estimate that the chances of seeing wild dolphins are closer to 97% or 98%. On the rare occasion that dolphins are not spotted we’ve found that it’s often after a large storm. The water on the surface may have calmed, but the storm may have disrupted the dolphins' food sources. Nevertheless, this is typically very temporary, and the dolphins quickly return.
Some Mauritius swimming with wild dolphin tours offer the opportunity for a free second trip should you not see the dolphins the first time.
